Ice Bucket Challenge Advances Antibody Toward Clinical Trial for ALS

CAMBRIDGE, MA – The ALS Therapy Development Institute announced it is directing, via its wholly owned subsidiary, Anelixis Therapeutics, $1.5 million toward the development of a potential treatment for ALS that targets the innate immune system. The funding comes from the $4 million the ALS Therapy Development Institute received from the 2014 social media phenomenon known as the "ALS Ice Bucket Challenge." The entire sum of $4 million raised directly by the Institute through last year’s Ice Bucket Challenge will be spent on ALS research. Read More...

Augie Nieto to Receive Club Industry’s Lifetime Achievement Award

CLUBINDUSTRY.COM - Augie Nieto will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from Club Industry on October 8 at the Club Industry Show in Chicago. Nieto created the Lifecycle and co-founded Life Fitness, a company he ran for 25 years. He is now chairman of Octane Fitness, serves as an operating advisor to private equity firm North Castle Partners, and is on the board of Curves and Jenny Craig. Planet Fitness Plans To Go Public

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Planet Fitness, the company known for its low-cost purple-and-yellow gyms, plans to go public. The company said Tuesday that it filed a "draft registration statement" to the Securities and Exchange Commission for an initial public offering. The filing is confidential and the paperwork is sealed from the public. Under the law, companies that have revenue under $1 billion are able to submit confidential IPO drafts to the SEC. Read More...

New Study Evaluates Whether Pedaling Backward Boosts Cycling Performance

SAN DIEGO, CA - Pedaling backward on a stationary bike has been used as a means to potentially boost cycling performance and change the way leg muscles are stimulated. Unfortunately, little research has been conducted on the effectiveness of this training approach. This prompted the American Council on Exercise (ACE) to commission an independent study from researchers at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse, to evaluate if pedaling in reverse provides benefits beyond, or in addition to, those seen with cycling forward on a Cascade recumbent bike.
