MEXICO – World Gym Mexico recently implemented SportsArt’s ECO-POWR premium cardio equipment for its Playa Del Carmen location. The installation includes five G660 treadmills, two steppers and two cycles from the ECO-POWR Elite line. A key component to the acquisition is ECO-POWR’s patented technology that captures human energy created by using the machines and returns it to the grid.
SportsArt is committed to leading the fitness industry in eco-friendly action through research, design and education on sustainable business solutions and practices. SportArt’s patented ECO-POWR technology is revolutionizing cardio workouts. The built-in technology drives a connection between individual actions and the impact those actions have on the environment by turning workouts into clean, renewable energy.
Currently, in this area of Mexico, gyms are limited to the number of exercise machines they can support, due to municipal limitations on power usage. By going with ECO-POWR equipment, World Gym eliminated the power issue and established a blueprint for sustainable fitness facilities in Mexico. “Based on power limitations, we were going to be restricted to just a few treadmills, which would not properly serve our membership,” said Ivan Galván, CEO, Word Gym Mexico. “But, when we connected with SportsArt, the script got flipped. These machines help offset our energy usage and we’re able to provide a full line of equipment for our members. The sustainability aspect is wonderful, but this was a business decision.”
While the entire ECO-POWR line is energy- generating, the G660 treadmill is the first piece of cardio equipment to be certified carbon negative by the British Standards Institute. The G660 has been verified to produce enough clean energy to offset more carbon than its certified footprint over its expected life cycle in a typical commercial facility. Based on the US Environmental Protection Agency equivalencies calculator and the average amount of clean electricity the G660 generates per day, it will be carbon negative in five years. The ECO-POWR Elite line’s treadmill, elliptical, and cycles are equipped with this green technology that turns up to 74% of user-generated energy into clean, renewable electricity.
“World Gym is demonstrating how sustainability can directly impact business objectives,” said Ruben Mejia, executive vice president, SportsArt Americas. “They took what was originally an obstacle and accepted the challenge to find a solution. As industry leaders seek more ways to deal with power limitations, save energy and offset carbon footprints, the G660 and ECO-POWR technology provide the link between good fitness business and sustainability.”
In Mexico, the primary limitation on commercial power availability is private companies’ access to the grid, leading to concerns about insufficient power generation and capacity to meet growing commercial demand. This situation has been further complicated by recent regulatory changes in the energy sector. The ECO-POWR technology is considered a key to offsetting the challenges faced by clubs and fitness facilities in Mexico. According to Mejia, “Power and energy concerns are impossible to ignore and can have a dramatic effect on club operations. Carbon-negative equipment allows organizations to reach and exceed sustainability goals or mandates and show a commitment to both a healthier planet and the values of their members.”
World Gym Mexico was named the “Best Gym in Mexico” for 2024 at the prestigious Fit Weekend & Awards event, and the gym consistently sets high standards in fitness and wellness. “This installation is significant for SportsArt, as it is the first direct deal with a commercial club in Mexico,” added Mejia. “There is active interest and investment in fitness in Mexico, and we are eager to work with an industry stalwart like World Gym in the promotion of sustainable fitness, as well as highlighting organizations that accept the challenge to make our world a better place.”
SportsArt has a long history of eco-friendly product innovation. It is one of the first manufacturers of self-powered elliptical trainers and cycles, and in 2007 the company introduced first ECO-DRIVE™ treadmill motor. Engineered to use 32% less power than standard treadmills, this motor system saves club owners thousands of dollars on electricity bills every year. SportsArt also carries a variety of self-generating ellipticals and cycles that require absolutely no outside power to operate. ECO-POWR™ is the company’s latest example of socially and environmentally responsible products that address the needs of facility owners.
