USTA Names 29 Outstanding Facility Award Winners

ORLANDO, FL – The USTA announces that the Lisa and Douglas Goldman Tennis Center in San Francisco was named the Featured Facility of the Year, the highest honor bestowed by the USTA on a tennis facility. The Lisa and Douglas Goldman Tennis Center was one of 29 winners of the USTA’s annual Outstanding Facility Awards program, which recognizes excellence in the construction and/or renovation of tennis facilities throughout the country.
All 29 recipients were honored Monday at an awards reception held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York as the 2023 US Open got under way.
The Lisa and Douglas Goldman Tennis Center, located within San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, underwent a $27 million renovation and reopened in 2021. The facility has served the residents of Northern California since 1894 and now boasts 16 lighted 78-foot courts, four multi-use mini courts and one dedicated pickleball court.
More than 2,000 players attend youth programming on a weekly basis and the facility has dedicated space for San Francisco Recreation & Parks’ Tennis Learning Center, which provides academic support and tennis instruction for students from underserved neighborhoods. The facility hosts a number of USTA events, and serves as the home facility for a number of local high schools and colleges.
“The Lisa and Douglas Goldman Tennis Center is an outstanding example of the ways in which a well- run and innovative community hub can touch and enhance lives through our lifetime sport,” said Craig Morris, Chief Executive, Community Tennis, USTA. “Facilities like this one are integral in the USTA’s efforts to grow the game at the grass-roots level and share the sport of tennis with as many people as possible. We are proud to recognize their remarkable efforts and we salute all 29 of these facilities for the impact each has made on their respective communities.”
Facilities were judged on the following criteria: overall layout and adaptation to site; excellence of court surface and lights; ease of maintenance; accommodations for players, spectators and press/officials; aesthetics; graphics (including the use of signs and landscaping); amenities such as casual seating for spectators, food services and social areas; and the facilities’ participation in grassroots tennis programs.
Nominated facilities were voted on in the following categories: Public Courts that are either small tennis centers with 2-11 courts or large tennis centers with 12 or more courts; Private Facilities that offer both USTA and public programming designed to help grow tennis (small: 2-11 courts; large: 12 or more courts); and Educational Institutions such as colleges, universities, public and private grade schools, middle schools, or high schools. All 2023 award winners will receive a wall plaque and an all-weather sign, which can be mounted at the facility.
