GILBERT, AZ – The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), a global leader in evidence-based learning and certifications for fitness and wellness professionals, announces legendary fitness icon Arnold Schwarzenegger as the recipient of the 2026 Don Wildman Commitment to Excellence Award.
Established in 2021 by NASM, this annual award honors the legacies of fitness pioneers who embody the spirit of innovation and determination championed by Don Wildman, the trailblazing founder of Bally Total Fitness. Schwarzenegger, a seven-time Mr. Olympia and five-time Mr. Universe, has spent over five decades revolutionizing the industry, transforming bodybuilding from a niche pursuit into a mainstream global fitness phenomenon.
“Arnold’s path to becoming a global symbol of fitness embodies the ‘build life’ approach we champion at NASM,” said Mehul Patel, CEO of NASM. “As our field moves toward longevity and cognitive wellbeing, Arnold continues to inspire generations to stay strong, active, and capable at every age. We are honored to celebrate the lasting impact he has made on the industry and beyond.”
Schwarzenegger’s legacy is defined by a relentless work ethic and a unique ability to leverage his platform for public health. Beyond his competitive records, his work with the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and his advocacy for youth fitness through After-School All-Stars have brought essential health resources to millions. He continues to scale this impact today, fostering the global fitness community through the Arnold Sports Festival and expanding access to fitness and wellness through his Pump Club Platform.
“I’ve always seen the gym as more than just a place to train; it’s where you build the vision for your life,” Arnold Schwarzenegger said. “Don Wildman was a true original who embodied a lifelong commitment to fitness, one that allowed him to live life to the fullest. Receiving an award in his name from NASM is a great honor. It reminds us to keep challenging ourselves and to support the next generation in fulfilling their potential.”
The Wildman family remains deeply committed to preserving the legacy of Don by celebrating those who share his infectious passion for vitality.
“Arnold Schwarzenegger embodies the ideals of innovation, leadership, and inspiration that the Don Wildman Commitment to Excellence Award was created to celebrate. He provides a role model for fitness professionals throughout the world to follow,” continued John Wildman. “Through his example, fitness leaders are inspired to transform the health of their clients, improve longevity, and enhance the quality of life for others. His lifelong dedication to promoting fitness and wellness aligns perfectly with NASM’s mission to advance education, innovation, and excellence in the global health and fitness community.”
Schwarzenegger joins a prestigious list of recipients, including 2024 honoree Augie Nieto, who was recognized for his contributions to equipment innovation and his extraordinary efforts to find a cure for ALS.
