SAN DIEGO, CA – For more than four decades, Total Gym equipment has served health clubs, physical therapy clinics, hospitals, universities, sports facilities and homes around the world. Recently, the company launched its newest cardio machine: the ELEVATE Row. Unlike other rowing machines on the market, the ELEVATE Row offers a unique combination of cardiorespiratory row training with a variety of resistance training exercises, but does it live up to this claim?

To investigate the effectiveness of the new rowing machine, the American Council on Exercise (ACE), a nonprofit organization with global reach that works to increase physical activity, enlisted the help of Lance Dalleck, Ph.D. and his research team at Western State Colorado University to explore how short- and long-term training on the Total Gym ELEVATE Row affects cardiovascular and muscular health.

“Because of the unique combination of cardiorespiratory exercise and resistance training exercises, we wanted to uncover how well this new workout machine performs,” said Cedric X. Bryant, president and chief science officer at ACE.

This study investigated the cardiovascular and metabolic responses of 16 healthy men and women with an average age of 28 during a single rowing session and a six-week rowing program.

The Short-Term Results

The study resulted in positive cardiovascular and metabolic responses to maintain and improve cardiovascular fitness following a single 30-minute row workout, which was classified the exercise as moderate-to-vigorous intensity.

The Long-Term Results

The (long-term) six-week row training program produced several positive health outcomes, including:

  • Lowered body weight;
  • Decreased body fat percentage;
  • Decreased blood glucose and triglycerides;
  • Increased HDL “good” cholesterol;
  • Improved cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness.

The Main Takeaways of the ELEVATE Row Study

The study uncovered that cardiorespiratory fitness could be maintained or improved by producing cardiovascular and metabolic responses from a typical session on the ELEVATE Row. Researchers also found that consistent ELEVATE Row training improves cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness and decreases several cardiovascular disease risk factors.

“ACE sees the Total Gym ELEVATE Row as a time-efficient way to effectively improve cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness, when used to work out in the moderate-to-vigorous intensity range,” said Todd Galati, ACE senior director of science and research.
