BOSTON, MA – Treadmills are the most popular form of equipment-based exercise among club members, according to IHRSA’s Consumer Trend Report, which analyzed seasonality of club membership and usage based on data from Spring 2014 to Fall 2014.

Other key findings include:

  • Significantly more men use weight/resistance machines than women. Women are more likely to use cardiovascular equipment than men with the exception of stationary bicycles.
  • Women members visited health clubs more frequently than their counterparts during the Spring/Summer season, while male nonmembers were more likely to have more frequent visits than non-member women.
  • Health club usage peaks among those who earn between $50,000 to $74,999 annually and then declines for households earning less than $50,000 or over $75,000.
  • The largest segment of members, whether male or female visit their club between 25x and 51x annually (less than once a week). Women are more likely to be core users (use at least 100x annually) than men.
