BOSTON, MA – We often think of weight loss in terms of “calories in, calories out”. But it’s not that simple, and it hasn’t really ever been. In his most recent Huffington Post article, Joe Moore discusses the benefits of exercise and why it’s about oh so much more than a calorie equation.

As Moore explains in the article, for many who struggle with obesity much of normal metabolic regulation like hunger cues and hormone levels are not as straightforward as once thought. In addition, obesity is linked to other problems like depression, sleep apnea, and chronic disease that can make a healthy lifestyle harder. Taking exercise at its face value – as a calorie burning activity – doesn’t give us the whole picture, or even close to it.

Essentially, from a “what will produce more weight loss in a few weeks” standpoint, reducing calories alone or in combination with exercise is usually more effective than exercise alone. But for all the marbles – for weight loss that lasts years not months – exercise is crucial to success (in combination with a healthy diet of course). This is really why the #WhyGetActive movement was born – to raise awareness for the many, many benefits of exercise – and reasons for doing so – that go beyond burning off yesterday’s cupcake.
