WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Health & Fitness Association (HFA) is fortifying its state advocacy program to further cement its role in shaping the policy landscape for the fitness industry at a state and federal level, enhancing lobbying representation in California and engaging with 50 State, a premiere government relations consulting firm to help build relationships across all 50 states.
HFA Partners with the California Fitness Alliance for Direct Advocacy in California
HFA will assume leadership of direct advocacy efforts in California, thanks to an agreement with the California Fitness Alliance (CFA). As part of this agreement, HFA has taken on the CFA lobbying contract with Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, a top-tier government relations firm in Sacramento, to amplify the industry’s voice with state lawmakers.
“California is a bellwether state, where policies often set the precedent for legislation across the nation,” said Liz Clark, HFA president and CEO. “With our team’s deep expertise in state advocacy, we are uniquely positioned to manage all aspects of engagement in California, including assuming the relationship with Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck. We are deeply grateful to the California Fitness Alliance for its confidence in HFA’s ability to lead this critical work, ensuring we have the strategic resources and strong connections needed to shape policy effectively and safeguard our members’ interests.”
This partnership reflects HFA’s growing influence and credibility as the industry’s trusted advocate. Cory Brightwell, CEO of Chuze Fitness and CFA board member, highlighted the impact of this collaboration: “The Health & Fitness Association’s growing strength in state advocacy gave us the confidence to entrust them with leading the industry’s voice in California. This collaboration is a clear example of how a unified and strategic approach can help ensure that fitness businesses in California and beyond are well-protected and positioned for growth.”
Enhancing Relationships with State Governors Through 50 State
Expanding its advocacy reach, HFA has also engaged 50 State, a premier government relations consulting firm specializing in state government affairs. With decades of experience helping organizations navigate complex policy challenges, 50 State will support HFA as it builds and sustains relationships with governors and key state leaders across the nation. This strategic move underscores HFA’s commitment to ensuring the fitness industry has a seat at the table where critical decisions are made.
“Governors play a pivotal role in shaping state policy, and 50 State’s strategic insight will help us strengthen those critical relationships,” said Mike Goscinski, HFA vice president of government affairs. “This investment solidifies HFA’s ability to influence decisions at the highest levels of state government and ensures we remain at the forefront of shaping a favorable policy environment for our members.”
State Advocacy: The Heart of HFA’s Mission
State-level advocacy has always been the cornerstone of HFA’s work to protect its members’ bottom lines. By proactively engaging with state policymakers, the association ensures fitness facilities are shielded from costly and disruptive regulations and are positioned for success. These recent investments are a clear testament to HFA’s strength, growth, and commitment to its members’ success.
“At the Health & Fitness Association, advocacy isn’t just a focus—it’s your industry’s insurance policy,” Clark said. “Our team’s knowledge, expertise, and growing resources are driving meaningful impact. With these investments, we’re doubling down on our mission to protect and grow the industry while creating an environment where fitness businesses can thrive. HFA is proud to be the national powerhouse for advocacy, delivering unmatched value and ensuring the future of the fitness industry is strong and resilient.”
