BOSTON, MA<\/strong> \u2013 The International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) released The 2015 IHRSA Global Report: The State of the Health Club Industry<\/em>. A perennial IHRSA bestseller, the report provides a comprehensive overview of the health club industry worldwide, which in 2014 totaled $84 billion in revenue as more than 180,000 clubs attracted 144.7 million members.<\/p>\n \u201cThe IHRSA Global Report<\/em> offers the most comprehensive overview of health club markets worldwide, providing topline statistics on nearly 70 markets,\u201d said Jay Ablondi, IHRSA’s executive vice president of global products. \u201cLeading markets continue to post strong performance indicators, while emerging markets are poised for growth.\u201d<\/p>\n The top 10 markets account for nearly three out of four members worldwide, led by the U.S., which has 54 million members, up from 52.9 million in 2013. Germany and the UK are second and third with 9.1 million and 8.3 million members, respectively. Brazil, the leading fitness market in Latin America, is home to nearly eight million members, fourth worldwide. These four markets are also among the top 10 worldwide in revenue with the U.S. ranking first ($24.2 billion), UK second ($6.7 billion), Germany third ($6.2 billion), and Brazil ninth ($2.4 billion).<\/p>\n Health club performance is also robust in the Asia-Pacific. Thirteen markets in the region attract 17 million members (excluding the Middle East). However, there is room for growth as the average member penetration rate in the Asia-Pacific is just 3.8%.
