She joined industry leaders from health clubs and studios, the wellness space, Michigan Department of Labor, and other agencies in the state to advocate for and adopt the Michigan Physical Activity Plan (MPAP). MPAP, Michigan’s tailored version of the National Physical Activity Plan, is a comprehensive, statewide roadmap designed to increase Michiganders’ physical activity by coordinating efforts across the sectors that shape how people live, work, learn, and play with the goal of improving health and well-being for the entire population.

Losey spoke at the policy symposium about HFA’s policy priorities, emphasizing the importance of educating lawmakers, building coalitions for the fitness industry, and highlighting the health and fitness industry’s impact on physical and mental health. More than 400 children participated in a group workout on the Capitol lawn to showcase our industry and promote healthy lifestyles. Losey ended her trip with a meeting with Michigan State Senator Kathy Schmaltz, who also happens to be the sister of our very own Jim Schmaltz, editor-in-chief of HFB.

HFA Sacramento Fly-In

On May 18-19, HFA held its first Sacramento Fly-In, bringing together 14 HFA members, fitness facility operators, and industry partners. The group met with California assembly members and staff to discuss four major pieces of legislation HFA staff have been working on this legislative session: the Cold Spa Modernization Bill (AB2330), lifting an outdated membership price cap to give Californians more choices in their wellness journey (AB2402), making employer-provided fitness benefits tax-free (AB2533), and advocating for common-sense reforms and clearer guidance on Private Attorneys General Act (PAGA), which allows “aggrieved employees” to file lawsuits against their employers to recover civil penalties for Labor Code violations. The trip also included a community workout, hosted by OrangeTheory, with lawmakers and HFA members.

“This event was a great opportunity to continue forming relationships with policymakers while making sure the health and fitness industry has a strong voice at the table,” says HFA Senior Manager of Government Affairs Charles Regnante, who along with Losey, organized and led the Sacramento event.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In May, HFA continued its work to strengthen relationships with policymakers and elevate the voice of the fitness industry by attending the Michigan Moves Day and organizing HFA’s first-ever Sacramento Advocacy Fly-In.

[3
419,682
