December 2015 Cover Story Preview: “2015 In Review”
Posted: December 9, 2015 in Other News

Justin CatesOne of my fondest memories traveling was my first trip to New York City. During my visit, I needed to take the subway to a few of my sightseeing destinations. Waiting on the platform, I could hear and see the train in the distance, and it was getting closer at a seemingly faster rate. Right before its arrival, the wind gusts put off from the train hit all the travelers waiting on the platform. Moments later, the train arrived and began to decelerate, bringing more wind with it. On the platform, you could see traveler’s clothes and hair moving with the direction of the arriving train. And, then, it stopped, the train’s doors opened and boarding began. Moments later, the train was off again; this time with new passengers and to a new destination. Read More...

November 2015 Cover Story Preview: Franciscan Omni Health & Fitness
Posted: November 11, 2015 in Other News

Franciscan Omni Health and Fitness This month’s cover story, featuring Franciscan Omni Health & Fitness, concludes our 22nd year of publication and is our 263rd monthly edition! At this time in our industry’s history and potential future, I can think of no better topic than the successful integration of health, fitness and wellness services. In fact, as I think back on some of this year’s cover stories, this topic has been a very common theme this year, specifically. In January, after touring the facility in person, I wrote about Cincinnati Sports Club, a health partner of The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. In March, we featured The Claremont Club, a facility in Claremont, California that is helping spinal cord-injured patients live more normal lives. In May, we featured the Edge, a 6-club chain in Vermont that is successfully working with the UVM Medical Center on an array of programs. And, in July, we featured Power Wellness, a company that specializes in the building of health and wellness facilities nation, and now, worldwide. Read More...

Posted: October 14, 2015 in Other News

John Wareing StatueDuring all of my travels across America, visiting literally thousands of clubs, I've never come across a situation like this one, in which the late John Wareing, Founder of Wareing's Gym, has been memorialized with a beautiful monument that was created and installed by members of his Virginia Beach, Virginia community in memory of Wareing. John Wareing was a war hero, a Virginia Beach police officer and trainer, a strong man, a friend and confidant, a fitness guru and a comic... John Wareing was a man who changed the lives of thousands of Virginia Beach, Virginia citizens for the better, and he was memorialized with a larger than life statue on the beach at 17th Street and Boardwalk. He was also known as the unofficial strongest man in the Navy. Read More...

September 2015 Cover Story Preview: Kim Manocherian and New York Health and Racquet Club – The Home of Health, Happiness and Everyday Heroes
Posted: September 2, 2015 in Other News

Kim Manocherian, CEO of NYHRCThe family business is an interesting concept, mixing elements from the business world and family dynamics to create an organization that offers a product or service. For some, it comes easy; for others, it is quite a challenge. In all cases, though, in order to succeed, a level of balance must be found, that of sound business concepts mixed with constructively handling possibly conflicting managerial styles. Crucially important to achieving this is communication. Going further, within the health and fitness club industry, in order to succeed, another balance must also occur, that of the relationship between the club and its member and what is offered to them across fitness, social, entertainment and other spheres. July 2015 Cover Story Preview: Tom Rhind and Power Wellness – Forging Ahead in the Health Care Frontier
Posted: July 8, 2015 in Other News

Power WellnessOn a daily basis, we read and hear conflicting reports about the growing successes of our industry versus the long road we have to go in order to change the dismal healthcare future so many studies and pundits say we have awaiting our society. As an industry, we have come a long way. Over the years, Club Insider has chronicled many stories that define our industry’s history, good and bad. In 1999, IHRSA defined the 50 Million (Members) by 2010 campaign. This industry has proudly reached and surpassed that goal, defining our industry, and hopefully, ensuring its future. For every wonderful statistic we add to our industry’s resume, though, others come to light reinforcing how far we have to go. Nonetheless, we cannot forget where we have come from and where we are going. Read More...

April 2015 Cover Story Preview: Tom Hatten and the Mountainside Way
Posted: April 8, 2015 in Other News

Tom HattenEntrepreneurship is a powerful thing. Like any great power, though, not just anyone can effectively wield it. It takes a very specific type of person to do so. In the world of business, so many have tried, but only a fraction of those who have done so can say they have truly succeeded in taming the beast that is business. Like any beast that is cornered, though, it will try to find a way to change the game in order to escape. Those who cannot adapt to that change are then sometimes consumed by it, even if the future looked bright and they were comfortable just beforehand. Read More...
